Little is known about the origin of this model. Built on a patent issued to Whitney in 1874. There are a number of variations that are all marked "Phoenix, Patent May 24, 74". Whitney name is not marked on any of the versions. They are all single-shot breech-loaders, with breech-block that lifts to the right side and upward for loading. Barrels are all blued, with case colored or blued receivers and walnut stocks. Approximately 25,000 manufactured totally between 1867 and 1881. Models and values listed.
